2015
In the aftermath of the worst floods to occur in Malawi, Africa this decade over a quarter of a million people were displaced and malnutrition was rife. At a children’s centre funded by Mobal the staff reported that there was a huge increase in hunger among the under-5 population.
In response Mobal sent plastic sheeting as temporary shelter for houses that had lost their roofs in the heavy rain but this was merely a sticking plaster. A better response was needed. Our partners in Malawi felt the most effective response would be to provide one nutritious meal each school day at local nurseries. This would encourage parents to send their children to school early and ensure the children received at least one hot meal a day and would also free up parents to go to work.
2016
In February of 2016 Mobal funded a dedicated school feeding charity- Seibo. Headquartered in Malawi but with a fundraising team working out of Tokyo we now help to feed 14,000 nursery & primary school children a hot daily meal at school. We do so by using the profits generated from sim sales for people visiting or living in Japan.
With the support of our suppliers and charity donors in addition to our profits we have built kitchen shelters equipped with fuel-efficient stoves, provided caregiver education and even dug wells where there was no water.
2017
In 2017 we donated JPY 15687226 (approx. USD 138,000) to Seibo Malawi to provide school meals & to Water Wells for Africa who helped us bring water to Tawina Nursery.
2018
Today (May 2018), 14,426 children in 40 nurseries and 12 primiary schools are being fed a school meal.
